Marie Flanigan of Marie Flanigan Interiors is renowned for her refined aesthetic and thoughtful attention to detail. She leads a nationally acclaimed design firm celebrated for creating spaces that are both timeless and personal. We sat down with Flanigan and her team to learn how they utilize natural stone to transform spaces into serene retreats that strike a balance between sophistication and comfort.

What Was The Client’s Vision For This Space, And How Did You Translate It Into Your Design?

“The client wanted a retreat that felt relaxing but with an emphasis on architectural detail. We created balance by pairing a strong marble-clad shower in steel and glass with the softness of a freestanding tub.”

Did You Draw From Any Specific Travel, Cultural, Or Architectural Influences When Making Material Selections?

“European bathhouses were a big influence. I love the way they treat stone as sculptural, and that spirit guided the marble selection here.”

What Was Your Collaboration Process Like With The MATERIAL Team?

“MATERIAL worked with us to source slabs with the perfect veining and tone. That attention to detail made the space feel elevated and cohesive, achieving the spa-like feel. They were partners in making sure every detail was thoughtfully executed.

We used honed marble for its velvety texture against polished steel and warm wood. The palette is quiet; whites and neutrals let the natural materials shine.

How Do Natural Materials Play Into Design Trends This Fall?

“Fall always brings a desire for grounding. Stones with rich veining and earthy tones connect us to nature and feel especially right this time of year. In cooler months, clients lean into limestones, terracottas, and marbles with depth.”

If You Had To Give Clients One Tip For Refreshing Their Spaces As We Head Into A New Season, What Would It Be?

“Focus on texture, a new stone accent, or even a layered textile can instantly shift a space for fall.

I’m drawn to stones with unexpected color right now: think burgundy marbles. They add personality while still feeling timeless.”

Designer Spotlight: Katie Davis Design

Katie Davis of Katie Davis Design creates luxurious interiors that are traditional, comfortable, and liveable. Drawing inspiration from Houston mid-century ranches and the charm of European country interiors, she intentionally layers patterns, textures, and natural materials to create welcoming living spaces. We sat down with Davis to discuss design trends and the inspiration behind this project.

How Did Your Client’s Vision Shape The Design and Direction For This Project?

They wanted a home that feels traditional yet comfortable, a place built for family, gatherings, laughter, not a show home that only looks pretty.

We translated that by starting with strong architectural bones (e.g., paneled foyer, crown moulding), then relaxing details as you move deeper in. We layered fabrics, patterns, and natural materials so each room felt warm without being overdone.”

Where Do You Draw Your Inspiration From and How Did It Play Into Material Selections?

“I’m inspired by old ranch homes and early suburb architecture in Houston. Those midcentury ranches with big windows, open flow, lots of natural light, and space, but not cold.

Also European countries and English interiors are a constant source of inspiration for our work: warm woods, aged metal, tile floors that patina. Those sensibilities guided material choices.”

How Did MATERIAL Help Bring Your Design To Life?

“MATERIAL helped me realize textures and finishes that feel rich and natural, like stone and tile that gain character quickly, rather than looking pristine and fragile. Their options allowed me to pick tiles in terracotta and stone finishes that tolerate daily wear yet elevate the aesthetic.

It was very hands-on. I’d bring them ideas: “this feels too polished, I want something that softens with use,” or “let’s find a tile that works with distressed wood. The [MATERIAL Team was] responsive to adjusting finishes, helping me source materials that balance beauty and durability.”

Can You Share Details About The Textures, Finishes, Or Color Palette That Worked Best?

“We leaned into textures that show grain (distressed/kiln-dried), unlacquered metals, aged bricks, and terracotta tiles.

The palette featured warm neutrals (creams, soft tans, muted earth tones) with pops of florals, pattern, and personality, plus cooler blues or checks in upholstery to temper the warmth.”

How Do You See Natural Materials Playing Into Design Trends This Season?

“Fall calls for things that feel grounded and tactile, not super glossy. Like stone and tile with texture, glaze variation, and matte finishes. Expect to see more layering: natural clay or brick tile, warm stone, worn-look wood, and patinated metals.

In cooler months, clients often want more warmth: terracotta, matte stone, warm wood.”

If You Had To Give Clients One Tip For Refreshing Their Spaces As We Head Into A New Season, What Would It Be?

“Start small: a new backsplash tile, switching out pillow fabrics, changing a lamp, or a piece of artwork. These make a big visual difference without undergoing a full reno.”
